Held on Hobart’s vibrant waterfront, the four day festival brings together the biggest collection of wooden boats in the Southern hemisphere, featuring wooden boats of all shapes and sizes, music performances, arts and maritime craft workshop ,boat building and regional food and wine. One can get to see a large number of boats dating back to the 18th and 19th century right down to the present day thus the event celebrates nation’s rich maritime culture and heritage.

The festival is held every two years in the month of February, first festival held in 1994 involved 180 boats from than onwards the event has continued to increase in size and scope. In 1996, around 200 boats enthusiastically arrived for more celebrations in spite of cold weather. In 2001, 230 boats were registered for the event and introduction of the` Parade of sail; and other new events, such as specially performed theatre, provided the substance to attract interstate and overseas visitors to the festival. In 2003 beautifully restored and presented WRAITH OF ODIN stole the show. The historic 22 feet TASSIE II was another feature of the festival. In 2005 the 1874 three- masted iron barque James Craig was brought back after almost 30 years of restoration in Sydney. In 2007 five tall ships including the HMB Endeavour, a replica of Captain Cook’s famous vessel Discovery, were part of the spectacle. Almost 700000 visitors attended the event. In 2009 the event showcased record number of boats with the dockside alive with a well orchestrated mix music- a live band on Saturday night which had people dancing well into the night.

Wooden boat festivals thus gives opportunity to enjoy relaxed atmosphere which offers more than just a taste of Tasmania’s best food and beverages.
