For years, many Australians suffered from an inferiority complex, called the "cultural cringe", regarding other countries. The cringe was most notable particularly against European countries. The Aussies believed that anything from overseas was inherently superior to anything Australian. This was especially true in Australia’s relationship with Britain. The era of such cultural cringe continued until the Australians began to travel more widely. Australia gradually got more exposure, to various cultural influences from other countries and finally this put an end to the cultural cringe.

Although, Australian culture is built and strongly influenced by the British, it remains and represents not one but many at a time.
