Guangzhou formerly known as Kwangchow is the capital and largest city of the Guangdong province in China. Located in southern china nearly 120 kilometers northwest of Hong Kong, this city is an important transportation Hub and trading port. The largest city in southern China is Guangzhou and the 3rd largest in the country, in the year 2008 the city was identified as the Beta World City by the Global City index produced by GaWC. This city is one of the major manufacturing and commercial regions in China. Guangzhou is one of the most developed cities in the country with a great transportation network, an industrial zone that includes a variety of industries supporting the national economy, and a major tourist destination in southern China.
Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone is among the first national development zones in the country established in 1984. It is located nearly30 kilometers from the downtown Guangzhou. Some of the major industries include electric machinery and appliances, electronic equipment, beverages, metal fabrication and chemical industry. This industrial zone is located about 100 kilometers from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and the closest port is the Shenzhen Port.
Guangzhou is the fourth city in the country to have an underground railway system; other three cities are Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. Currently this underground network covers a total length of 236 kilometers and a project for its expansion up to 500 kilometers is in progress. Along with the rail network recently Guangzhou has introduced the second largest Bus rapid Transit system in use, second only to Trans Milenio of Bogotá. Most of the buses and taxis in the city use the LPG fuel in order to keep the environment clean and reduce pollution. Guangzhou is the city that uses most LPG fueled Vehicles in the world.
Main airport serving the city is Baiyun International Airport. Located in the Huadu district this airport is the second busiest airport in the country in terms of traffic movement. This airport has two runways and there are plans for three more runways to meet the growing air traffic demand. This airport provides services to many international airlines as well as national airlines having flights to Guangzhou. This airport caters passenger flights and cargo/freight flights. This airport was constructed to replace the old Baiyun International airport that was located very close to the city center and had no space for future expansion.
